Court of Claims

THE COURT'S TRACK RECORD

There are approximately 8,500 cases filed against the State of Illinois in the Court of Claims each year, ranging from personal injury, awards to innocent victims of violent crime. The Court of Claims also makes awards to the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters National Guard members and Illinois soldiers, killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, in the line of duty.

Since taking office in January 1999, Secretary of State Jesse White in conjunction with the judges, commissioners, Court Administrator's staff and Clerk's staff have succeeded in reducing the average processing time from case filing to conclusion by six to eight months.

During Fiscal Year 2005, Clerk staff promptly voucher over $38 million in claims awarded by the Court with approval of the legislature, with approximately $24 million paid to victims of violent crime in Illinois.
